Database Software packages

A database enables records and files to be stored digitally.  Each provider will have a slightly different interface for their databases but the functions will be similar.  Once you have learned one system, it isn't difficult to use another.  

The beauty of a digital database is that it reduces the amount of space required to physically store records and it is accessible anywhere.

Essentially, a database is a big catalogue.  You decide what information you want to collect and how you want to store it.  The database itself enables you to search information in a variety of different ways.  You can see how this is more useful than storing files in a cabinet as that information can only be accessed one way!  

How might a database be useful to you?  If you run a business or you collect items you may need to catalogue them under more than one heading.  If that is the case, a database will be very useful because the information you enter into it can be accessed by searching for a particular word, category or location.
