Knitting
Knitting equipment
Knitting requires needles and yarn! The needle size depends on the yarn you are using but you can create some interesting effects by mixing these up! The accessories that you may find useful in your knitting kit are: scissors, tape measure, cable needle, circular needles, stitch holders, stitch markers row counter and a bodkin. Choosing yarn can take time because there are so many options available today, yarn ranges in price too and it pays to shop around.
Stitches
There are two main stitches to learn when knitting and they are: plain stitch and purl stitch. A combination of plain and purl knitting is used in the picture above. The bottom of the knitting (opposite ends to pins) is known as ribbing and in the main part of the knitting stocking stitch is used. Both of these sections use a combination of plain and purl stitches. There are other effects that can be created from these stitches, for example: bobbles (blackberry stitch) and cable (twisted stitches). The picture above shows intarsia knitting (creating a picture). All kinds of effects can be created through knitting, the only other thing to learn is how to cast on and off!
