Being able to play and / or write music is only part of the story! To truly understand the composer's intentions an understanding of music theory at a basic level is required. Most musicians study music theory to achieve grade 5 status so that they can continue their practical studies from grade 6 and beyond. We teach theory from the very beginning up to post grade 8. Most people study music theory at the same time as learning to play an instrument. If you can read music and understand clef, time signature, rhythm and pitch then you have learned music theory at some point in your musical journey. However, the two are rarely separated because the way music is written impacts on the way it is performed and the musical ideas created shape how music is written.
